Formal Relations with China
The Republic of the Fiji was the first Pacific Island country to establish diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China, in 1975. China established an embassy in Fiji in 1976, and Fiji opened its embassy in China in 2001 and it has the strategic reach of expanding our reach and strengthening our relations with the People’s Republic of China.
The current Ambassador, H.E. Manasa Tagicakibau took up post in August 2018, and presented his credentials to H.E President Xi Jinping on 10th September 2018 at the Great Hall of the People, Beijing.
The Fiji Embassy in Beijing looks after Fiji's interest and engagement with the 22 provinces four (4) municipalities, five (5) autonomous regions, and two (2) Special Administrative Regions, Chinese Provinces. The Consular-General Office is located in Shanghai (Business hub in China), which looks into specific trade matters.
There is also a Tourism Regional Office located in Shanghai. The Embassy also works closely with the Honorary Consul of Fiji in Hong Kong and Fiji Chamber of Commerce (Hong Kong) with regards to Consular Services, protocol facilitation of high-level visits and transits in HK, and partnership in trade, tourism and investment events.
The Fijian Ambassador to China is also accredited to Kazakhstan and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).
Fiji embraces the ‘One-China’ policy and the two overarching goals of China’s international relations: namely, (i) the fostering of a new form of international relations; and (ii) the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.
