Fiji, a country in the South Pacific, is an archipelago of more than 300 islands of which 110 are permanently inhabited and more than 500 islets, amounting to a total land area of about 18,300 square kilometres (7,100 sq. mi).
The two major islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, account for 87% of the population of close to 900,000. Fiji is famed for its rugged landscapes, palm-lined beaches and coral reefs with clear lagoons. Viti Levu and Vanua Levu contain most of the population. Viti Levu is home to the capital, Suva, a port city with British colonial architecture.
